Tigers’ Martinez named top DH

New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – Victor Martinez of the Detroit Tigers was
selected as the winner of the 2014 Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated
Hitter Award on Thursday.

Victor Martinez received 75 of the 90 first-place votes to become the third
Tigers player to be named the top DH, joining Willie Horton (1975) and Rusty
Staub (1978).

The 35-year-old Martinez finished second in the voting for the American League
MVP after batting .335 with 33 doubles, 32 home runs and 103 RBI in 151 games
last season. He led the majors with a .974 OPS (on-base percentage +
slugging) and struck out only 42 times in 561 at-bats.

Boston’s David Ortiz, a seven-time winner of the award, finished second in the
voting.
