Red Sox activate Uehara

Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) – Boston Red Sox closer Koji Uehara was
activated off the 15-day disabled list Monday.

Uehara started the year on the DL, retroactive to March 27, because of a
strained left hamstring. He made three appearances in spring training, the
last on March 14, and pitched in a minor league rehab game on Saturday.

The 40-year-old right-hander earned his first All-Star nod last season and
finished the campaign with 26 saves.

Boston opened a roster spot by optioning pitcher Tommy Layne to Triple-A
Pawtucket. The 30-year-old lefty has appeared in four games for the Red Sox
this season and has allowed three runs in 4 2/3 innings.
