St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) – The Tampa Bay Rays placed first
baseman James Loney on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a mild right
oblique strain.
Loney was scratched from Tuesday’s lineup after he tweaked his right side
during batting practice. He was 0-for-2 with a walk in Tampa Bay’s 6-2 Opening
Day loss to Baltimore on Monday.
The Rays also selected the contract of first baseman Allan Dykstra from
Triple-A Durham. To make room for Dykstra on the 40-man roster, the club
placed pitcher Burch Smith, who recently underwent Tommy John surgery, on the
60-day DL.
Dykstra is in Wednesday’s lineup against the Orioles and will make his major
league debut.
