Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) – The Philadelphia Phillies have
announced the signing of left-handed pitcher Elvis Araujo to a major league
contract.
Araujo, 23, has pitched as high as Double-A with Akron (EL). In 2014, he made
43 appearances out of the bullpen for Akron and Class-A Advanced Carolina
(CAR), pitching to a 3.42 ERA in 50 innings with 50 strikeouts and 28 walks.
He was granted free agency last month.
The Venezuelan native was originally signed by Cleveland in 2007. After
missing all of 2009 and much of 2010 with an elbow injury, Araujo was named
Cleveland’s 11th best prospect by Baseball America before the 2012 season. He
is currently pitching in the Venezuelan Winter League and has eight strikeouts
in seven scoreless innings.
