Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – The New York Mets signed outfielder/first
baseman John Mayberry Jr. to a one-year contract.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but reports during last week’s Winter
Meetings indicated it be worth $1.45 million.
Mayberry, 30, spent 2014 with Philadelphia and Toronto and batted .212 with
seven home runs in 78 games, mostly in the outfield.
In his six-year big league career, Mayberry is a .241 hitter with 53 home
runs. Against left-handed pitching, he owns a .269 average with 30 home runs
and a .857 OPS.
To make room for Mayberry on the 40-man roster, the Mets designated right-
handed pitcher Gonzalez Germen for assignment.
Germen has 54 relief appearances since making his major league debut with the
Mets in 2013 and has 64 strikeouts with a 4.31 ERA in 64 2/3 innings.
