Howard, Phillies beat Marlins to avoid sweep

Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) – Ryan Howard had two RBI and scored a run as
the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Miami Marlins 6-2 in Sunday’s finale of a
three-game series.

Ben Revere had three hits and drove in one run on his 27th birthday, helping
the Phillies avoid the sweep and snap a five-game skid. Severino Gonzalez
(1-1) picked up his first career win in his second major league start after
holding the Marlins to two runs on five hits over five innings.

“Severino did fine with his five innings. I thought he made some quality
pitches,” said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg.

Giancarlo Stanton and Jhonatan Solano each knocked in a run for the Marlins,
who had their win streak end at four games. The loss was just the second in
the last 11 games for the club.

Miami starter Jarred Cosart (1-2) gave up three runs on five hits and struck
out six in five-plus innings.

The former Phillies draft pick allowed only an infield single through the
first four frames, but a leadoff walk in the fifth came back to haunt him. A
single by Cameron Rupp put two men on base and Revere tied the game at 1-1 by
hitting a grounder under the glove of shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria.

Cosart was done after the first three batters reached base in the sixth. He
hit Darin Ruf, who scored on a rare triple by Howard to tie the game at 2-2.
Grady Sizemore plated Howard with a single to put the Phillies in front.

“For me, the game came down to that sixth inning,” said Marlins manager Mike
Redmond.

Miami had briefly regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth when Jhonatan
Solano doubled home his younger brother Donovan.

The Phillies scored two more runs in the seventh and added another in the
eighth.

Revere singled in the seventh and advanced on a wild pitch by reliever Bryan
Morris. After Chase Utley reached on an error by Donovan Solano, Ruf and
Howard hit back-to-back RBI singles.

Odubel Herrera had a run-scoring single in the eighth to make it 6-2.

The Marlins scored a run without a hit in the first inning. Ichiro Suzuki
drew a leadoff walk and swiped two bases before scoring on Stanton’s sacrifice
fly.

Game Notes

The Phillies notched their 200th win against the Marlins … Herrera has
reached base safely in each of his last 18 games … Center fielder Marcell
Ozuna extended his hitting versus Philadelphia to 15 games with a single in
the fourth inning.
