Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) – The Milwaukee Brewers fired manager Ron
Roenicke just 25 games into the season.
The announcement was made Sunday following a 5-3 victory over the Chicago
Cubs.
“This has been a difficult start to the season — something that we certainly
didn’t anticipate,” Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said in a statement.
“It’s all about wins and losses, and after the first month of play this year
we didn’t see the progress and improvement we had hoped for.
“We appreciate all that Ron has done for our organization and he has handled
his duties with great professionalism and dedication. The reasons for our
disappointing start are many, but we determined that it’s in the best
interests of the club to make this move.”
The Brewers will announce Roenicke’s replacement at a press conference on
Monday.
The team jumped out to a disappointing start after batting just .221 with a
.278 on-base percentage and sits last in the Central Division with a 7-18
record following last season’s second-half collapse.
The Brewers were 51-32 and led the Central by 6 1/2 games on June 28 of last
season, but wound up finishing third in the division and six games back in the
wild card race at 82-80.
Despite the forgettable finish, Milwaukee decided to stick with Roenicke and
picked up the 2016 option on his contract.
In four-plus seasons as the Brewers’ manager, Roenicke compiled a 342-331
record. In his first year in 2011, he led the Brewers to a franchise-record 96
wins and a division title.
